Grand Theft Motorcycle

Little Rock, AR - I was coming home from work yesterday, excited to celebrate Tim's last day at work, when I noticed two police cars across the street from my house. I pulled into my driveway, got out to get the mail, and watched the two officers turn to look at me. The neighbor even pointed to me, and my heart sank.

I knew something was terribly wrong.

So I pulled farther up the driveway as the two police vehicles pulled in behind me, and as I approached the house, I noticed our bike laying on its side. No, I thought... Anything but the bike... We're about to go around the world on it, nothing can happen to it now.

I got out of the car, and ran over to the bike as the police officers recounted how the neighbor saw two men trying to steal the bike, and so he called the police. I whipped out my phone and dialed Tim's number.

It was my last day of work. I had put in my two-week notice obviously two weeks ago and my coworkers were kind enough to throw me a final farewell party after work at 5:00.

But at 4:30, just as I was putting away my computer and taking down my pictures in my cubicle, I got a phone call from Marisa stating the police were in our backyard, and someone had tried to steal the motorcycle (a.k.a. the lifeblood of our future).

I drove over there as fast my car could safely carry me, and it seemed that the traffic gods were on my side because I had nothing but green lights on the way home.

Once I arrived, I saw Marisa standing outside with her hands on her hips, and then I noticed the bike laid over like it had been defeated in battle.
This was a terrifying sight, but in reality, we had been extremely fortunate.

It turns out we have a superhero neighbor, who when seeing the suspicious men walking around the bike, snipping off the cover and messing with the wires, the neighbor drove over like a bat out of hell, whipped out his pistol, and screamed, “Im gonna shoot you sons o' bitches next time!” as they ran off into the woods.

I can't tell you how happy I am that I had a good neighbor, and that these men were stupid would-be thieves.

The redneck robbers had cut my heated grip wires and were trying to splice them to hot-wire the bike. Brilliant!

After an hour of re-terminating the wires, all is well in the world. Things could have been real bad, as this is our first real hiccup to our global adventure, and without a functioning bike, there would be no adventure at all. But we are lucky to have had this happen to us now so that we can take precautionary measures to make sure it doesn't happen again.
